Dinner Roll

Dinner rolls have a long history and are a staple on Thanksgiving tables across the United States.

Dinner rolls are particularly popular in the Midwest and Southern United States, where bread is an essential component of meals. However, they are enjoyed nationwide during holiday gatherings, including Thanksgiving. The soft and fluffy texture, often served with butter, complements the festive meal and has become a symbol of warmth and togetherness during the holiday season.

Whether served at Thanksgiving or any other family dinner, dinner rolls are a beloved and versatile addition to American cuisine. Their simplicity and comforting nature make them a favorite among people of all ages.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)

1. Activate Yeast:

In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, active dry yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.

2. Combine Ingredients:

In a large bowl, combine the melted butter, salt, and activated yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour, stirring continuously, until a soft dough forms.

3. Knead Dough:

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 6-8 minutes or until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky.

4. First Rise:

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, approximately 1 hour.

5. Shape Rolls:

Punch down the risen dough and turn it onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into small portions and shape them into rolls.

6. Second Rise:

Place the shaped rolls on a baking sheet, cover with a damp cloth, and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.

7. Preheat Oven:

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

8. Brush with Egg Wash:

Brush the tops of the rolls with the beaten egg for a golden finish.

9. Bake:

Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown.

10. Serve:

Serve the dinner rolls warm with butter.

Enjoy your homemade Dinner Rolls as a delightful accompaniment to your Thanksgiving feast!
