| Traditional Apple Pie |
The origins of the apple pie date back to medieval England, and the recipe was brought to America by early European settlers. Over time, apple pie became a symbol of American culinary culture and is often referred to as a quintessential American dessert.
Apple pie is immensely popular in the United States and is often associated with American traditions, including Thanksgiving and Independence Day celebrations. The phrase "as American as apple pie" reflects its cultural significance.
Apple pie is enjoyed throughout the country, and different regions may have variations in the type of apples used or additional spices incorporated into the filling. It is frequently served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
INGREDIENTS:
For the Pie Crust:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 6-8 tablespoons ice water
For the Apple Filling:
- 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (a mix of tart and sweet varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon butter, diced (for dotting on top)
1. Prepare Pie Crust:
In a food processor, pulse together the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the cold, diced butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, pulsing until the dough just comes together.
2. Divide and Chill:
Divide the dough into two equal portions, shape each into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
3. Preheat Oven:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
4. Roll Out Crusts:
On a floured surface, roll out one disk of dough to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Place the rolled-out crust in the pie plate.
5. Prepare Filling:
In a large bowl, toss together the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until the apples are well coated.
6. Fill Pie:
Transfer the apple filling into the prepared pie crust. Dot the filling with diced butter.
7. Roll Out Second Crust:
Roll out the second disk of dough and place it over the apple filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
8. Ventilation:
Cut slits or create a decorative pattern on the top crust to allow steam to escape.
9. Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
10. Cool:
Allow the apple pie to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing.
Enjoy your classic American Apple Pie as a timeless and comforting dessert!
